Conveyor pulley lagging

Over time a bare steel pulley wears and the belt slips on it – especially in wet, muddy and dusty conditions. Lagging the pulley increases friction between pulley and belt, reduces slip and belt wear, and protects the pulley from corrosion and wear. The rubber lagging also reduces noise and helps the pulley self-clean.

Applications

  • drive pulleys – where friction matters most

  • return, take-up and snub pulleys – protection against wear and material build-up

  • quarries, cement plants, asphalt plants, mines, power generation, ports and any conveyor where the belt slips

Lagging types

  • Rubber with diamond pattern (also called checker rubber) (small diamond) – most common – fabric belts under medium and lower load

  • Square-pattern rubber (square) – fabric belts under medium and lower load

  • Large diamond-pattern rubber (large diamond) – long conveyors, large pulleys, heavily loaded belts

  • Ceramic lagging (ceramic tiles in rubber) – highest friction – wet, mud, very heavily loaded belts, cement plants and mines

  • Lagging in various thicknesses, according to pulley diameter and load.

  • The lagging has a bonding layer that ensures a strong rubber-to-metal bond.

  • Oil-resistant, food-grade and plain lagging also available to order.

How we work

  • removing the old lagging and cleaning the pulley by blasting or grinding

  • applying primer and adhesive

  • bonding the new lagging and finishing the joints

  • we work on site, without removing the pulley, or in our workshop

When is it time for new lagging?

  • the belt slips at start-up or under full load

  • the lagging is worn, detached or the diamond pattern is worn smooth

  • material builds up on the pulley

  • the pulley is corroded or worn Conveyor pulleys →

FAQ

Rubber or ceramic lagging?

For most conveyors diamond-pattern rubber is sufficient; ceramic pays off with water, mud and high forces on the drive pulley.

Does the pulley have to be removed?

Not necessarily – we also lag pulleys on site.

How long does lagging last?

It depends on operating conditions, material and belt tension – well-applied lagging lasts many times longer than a bare pulley.

Is your belt slipping?
